How to read a German plate

The letters in front of the seal are the Kreis code: one to three letters for the district or city where the car was registered. B is Berlin, TÜ is Tübingen, THW is the federal agency for technical relief.

A few to start with

  • B Berlin
  • M Munich
  • TÜ Tübingen
  • THW Technisches Hilfswerk

How it works

From a car in the fast lane to a tick on your list, in three moves.

  1. Spot a plate

On the motorway, in the car park, anywhere.

  2. Log the code

Type the code, pick the date and confirm.

  3. Watch your year grow

Every Kreis counts once per year. On 1 January everyone starts over.

The map

Germany, filling up while you drive

Every code you log colours in the district it was issued in. A corner of the country goes from grey to blue to yellow, and one look tells you where you have never been.

154 Kreise have not been spotted by anybody this year. One of them is about to overtake you.

  • All 739 registration districts on one drawing, not just the sixteen states.
  • Switch between this year and everything you ever logged.
  • Tap a district and see which of its codes you still owe.

Look backs

Your week, your month, your season — written up for you

On Sunday evening the game writes up your week: what you logged, which Kreise you had never had before, how many days you were out and where you stand. On the first of the month the month follows, and at New Year the whole season.

  • In your inbox if you want it, and always in your timeline.
  • It says so when a week is your best yet, and how long your run has been going.
  • A card is frozen the day its period closes: week 12 says in December what it said in March.

Recently added Kreise

The list never stands still. Players report codes that are missing, Germany reissues district codes it once retired, and special plates keep turning up. Every report is checked before it joins the game.

Frequently asked questions

What players usually want to know first.

Does a Kreis count more than once?

No. Every Kreis counts once per calendar year. On 1 January the counter resets and your history is kept.

What about THW, Bundeswehr or diplomatic plates?

They count as full Kreise and live in their own group called Special.

Can I log a plate I saw last week?

Yes, as long as the date is not in the future and falls within the current year.

A code is missing. What now?

Report it from inside the game. We check every submission and publish it when it is right.

The next car you overtake already counts

Make an account, log your first code and see how far you get this year.
